The Series 5046SC system incorporates Self Contained high voltage power supply, an electrooptic light modulator Pockels cell and high speed HV switches in a single, EMI/RFI shielded enclosure. Only +24 Volts DC and two externally generated trigger signals are required for operation. The systems are highly reliable, completely solid state and meet all requirements of U.S. and European EMC standards.
5046SC Systems are self-contained complete systems. All components are contained in the Optical Head Assembly OHA “Black box”. The locking lid completes the“shielded enclosure” reducing EMI >97% and insures safe operation of laboratory equipment and clean signals from fast detectors.
5046SC systems can operate over a wide range of voltages. They are capable of producing quarter and halfwave retardation voltages over an optical spectrum of 250 nm to more than 2200 nm with appropriate EOM Pockels cell. All FastPulse Technology drivers hold the cell at zero voltage potential when not switching to protect against ion migration, insuring maximum cell lifetime.
Exhibiting optical rise and fall times as fast as 3 nanoseconds. 5046SC Systems are exceptionally useful for regenerative amplifier switch-out, laser pulse slicing, mode locked pulse gating, cavity dumping and Q-switching. The systems are valuable for both intracavity and extracavity applications and offer the latest technology in reliable, solid state, high voltage switching design with negligible EMI/RFI. They are used by several OEM laser manufacturers in their regenerative laser systems and 100's are installed in National Labs.
Series 5046SC Systems can be configured for a variety of applications. An extensive selection of Pockels cells and operating parameters are available. Optical switching is accomplished by appropriate Pockels cell such as Series Q1059, CF1043, 1144, 1145 KD*P cells.
Maximum system repetition rate is determined by the Pockels cell capacitance and required voltage. For a Series 1059 Pockels cell (KD*P crystal, 5 pf) and nominal 8.5 kV voltage setting, the repetition rate is limited to 2.5 kHz. Options include lower voltage drivers with higher switching rates for use with cells with lower voltage requirements. Our engineering staff will work with you to optimize a system for your particular application.
The standard 5046SC system is supplied with a 10mm aperture Q1059 series KD*P Pockels cell (Specify your wavelength from 500nm to 1064nm. The series Q1059 specifications can be found in our Q1059 series data sheet. Cell options include DKDP cells with apertures 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm. The driver works with any capacitive load Pockels cell including RTP (Rubidium Titanyl Phosphate) series 1147 and BBO (Barium Borate) series 1150 models.

5046SC Systems are self-contained complete systems. All components are contained in the Optical Head Assembly OHA “Black box”.
The 5046SC system consists of the following elements:

- Q1059P Series KD*P Pockels cell 10mm aperture, AR coated mounted on gimbal.
- MG-145 Precision Pitch & Azimuth Gimbal with micrometer adjustment.

MW4024F AC/DC PS with BNC termination +24V 100/220V 50-60Hz.

5046SCM “M”version shorter length and C/L height, MG-CL38 gimbal. Same HVPS and switches. HV Adjust options: Locking HV knob or VC “voltage control” BNC input 0-5V input 1V ~2KV scale. Higher (5kHz) pulse rate in 3KV and 5KV versions. 5046SC models with DKDP cell upgrade apertures up to 30mm. Larger 5046SC-13KV model, max 50Hz, recommended for large aperture 1144 series 1 micron cells. 1. Optical rise and fall times are independent of the set driver voltage. (same for 5KV and 10KV.)
2. Higher repetition rates models are offered for use with lower operating voltage cells. Dual crystal KD*P cell 1042 series RTP cells series 1147 as well as standard cell Q1059 at shorter wavelengths (<650 nm) which require lower voltage.
3. Model 5046SCM shorter length with MG-CL38 Gimbal without protruding micrometers, the optical C/L height 51mm.
4. Wavelength range is dependent on the choice of EOM Pockels cell and crystal material. The full 250nm to 2200nm is covered by DKDP (300-1320nm), BBO 1150 series (250-1320nm) and RTP (500-2200 nm) Pockels cell lines.

BASIC 101 Tech Notes:
- Pulse Pickers/Choppers have fast ON leading edge and fast OFF falling edge switching of cell.Q-switch drivers have one “switch” and only provide a fast leading edge, the falling edge can be >50us depending on model.
- DKDP and KD*P are the same crystal and the largest aperture Pockels cells at relatively modest price. It is the most common type of cell. DKDP is a piezo material, PW < 200ns and switching rate <5kHz are required for best operation.
- Voltage required for a given cell is linear with wavelength. (1064nm cell requires 2x voltage of 532nm cell)
- Pockels cell , Electro-Optic Modulator or EOM and Q-switch are generically all the same and are used interchangeably.
- BBO is considered the highest power handling EO crystal material for a Pockels cell. BBO is also optimal choice for UV applications for small beams. BBO requires highest voltage for a given aperture resulting in double and triple crystal cells.
