MiniShaker
A camera family for volumetric flow field measurement
The MiniShaker is an integrated multi-camera system that is ideal for quantitative 3D flow field measurements with Shake-the-Box[1] (STB, high-density PTV) or Tomographic PIV[2] (3D correlationbased measurement). With its rigid housing and pre-alignment of the cameras, the compact system is quickly installed and easy to operate for measurements of velocity, acceleration, pressure and turbulence quantities.
Users can select from four MiniShaker models designed for a wide range of applications from flows in liquids and low-speed studies in gas flows to high-speed applications up to the supersonic regime*. LaVision’s data acquisition and visualization software DaVis 10 supports time-resolved and double-frame Tomographic PIV with one illumination per frame and Shake-the-Box for time-resolved and 2- and 4-pulse double-frame analysis[3].
*For underwater applications and for applications in wind tunnels up to 50 m/s and with robot support, two further models MiniShaker Underwater and MiniShaker Aero are documented on separate datasheets.
Application range
All MiniShaker models are capable of time-resolved and double-frame recording. Frame rates of up to 1 kHz (at reduced resolution) are possible with the MiniShaker TR allowing for time-resolved measurements of flows with velocities up to 5 m/s. The other MiniShaker models are primarily intended for double-frame recording. Compared to the MiniShaker TR, the MiniShaker 2M profits from a higher bit depth with an interframe time for double-frame recording suitable for measurements of mid-speed flows up to 40 m/s. The MiniShaker models MiniShaker 6M and MiniShaker 9M with very small interframe times in double-frame recording are designed for measurements at higher spatial resolution and for higher velocities up to the supersonic regime.
Educational PIV/PTV system
The MiniShaker TR is well-suited for use with volumetric LED-illumination with LaVision’s LED-Flashlight 300, making the whole setup operationally safe, attractively priced and ideal also for educational purposes.
Easy installation and operation
For easy installation and operation complicated cabling is avoided using a USB 3 interface for data transfer. Only the models MiniShaker 6M and 9M require an additional power supply.
Access to obstructed volumes
All models can be optionally equipped with a laser fiber for co-axial illumination featuring air flow measurements even in obstructed volumes.
Flexible measurement volumes
A wide range of lenses allows for a quick and easy adaptation to different desired measurement volumes. The cross section of a measurement volume increases with the distance to the cameras. Typical measurement volumes for a focal distance of 48.5 cm are (W x H x L in cm):
LIF filters for the suppression of background noise
Filters for suppressing the LIF signal of a rhodamine coating are available. For 4 mm and 8 mm lenses with MiniShaker TR, the suppression works on the circle of inner diameter 1000 px or 2000 px, respectively. For MiniShaker 2M and 8 mm lenses the suppression works for a diameter of 1638 px. For all other lenses, the LIF signal suppression works on the full sensor. MiniShaker TR and its compact version MiniShaker TR-S can be run in DaVis 8.4 as high-speed cameras. Certain software features require DaVis 10, e.g. Pressure from PIV, Multi-pulse Shake-the-Box and double-frame
recording.

Recording modes
The maximum velocity which can be measured by a system is limited by the time dt.In time-resolved recording, the frame rate equals the illumination rate defining dt. In 2-pulse recording, dt is the time between the 2 pulses, limited by the interframe time. Time-resolved and 2-pulse data
are processed by STB[1] or Tomographic PIV[2].In 4-pulse recording, each of the two image frames is illuminated twice, requiring STB processing[3].
